Data, daily or unlimited?
Data plans
A set amount of data to use over the trip. Best value for most travellers.
Daily data
1 GB or 3 GB of high-speed data every day. Once it's used, you stay connected at reduced speed until it resets the next day.
Unlimited
No data cap. 5 Mbps covers maps, messaging, social media, video calls and SD video. 10 Mbps covers HD video. Some destinations also sell full speed.
Make your data last
- Download before you fly. Save offline maps in Google Maps, and download shows, music and podcasts on Wi-Fi.
- Keep photo backup on Wi-Fi. iPhone: Settings › Apps › Photos › Mobile Data, turn it off. Google Photos: Backup settings, turn off backup on mobile data.
- Keep app updates on Wi-Fi. iPhone: Settings › Apps › App Store, turn off Automatic Downloads under Mobile Data. Android: Play Store › Settings › Network preferences › Auto-update apps › Over Wi-Fi only.
- Turn on Low Data Mode. iPhone: Settings › Mobile Service › your travel eSIM › Data Mode › Low Data Mode. Android: Settings › Network & internet › Data Saver.
- Lower video quality. Set Netflix, YouTube and Instagram to their data saver or lower quality setting.
- Track what you use. Reset your phone's usage counter when the plan starts. How to check usage
Using a hotspot
Every plan supports hotspot. A laptop uses far more than a phone, about 0.5–1 GB an hour, because it syncs files and updates in the background. Pause cloud sync and updates before you connect, and pick 50 GB or unlimited if you'll work from it.
Common questions
How much data do I need for a week?
About 3 GB with just maps and messages, 10 GB for everyday use with social media, and unlimited if you stream video.
Is 1 GB a day enough?
Yes for most travellers. 1 GB covers maps, messaging, browsing and about an hour of social media. It isn't enough for streaming video or a laptop hotspot.
How much data does Google Maps use?
About 5–10 MB an hour while navigating. Download offline maps on Wi-Fi before you fly and it uses almost none.
Is 5 Mbps fast enough?
Yes for maps, messaging, social media, video calls and SD video. For HD video, pick a 10 Mbps or full-speed plan.
