Japan eSIM questions
How much does the Japan eSIM cost?
Data plans start at $4.95 for 1GB over 7 days, and 10GB for 30 days is $15.95. Daily data starts at $4.95 for 3 days at 1GB a day. Unlimited data starts at $15.95 for 3 days. Prices are in AUD, with no roaming charges on top.
How much data do I need in Japan?
Most travellers use about 1GB a day with maps, messaging and some social media, so 10GB ($15.95) covers a week. Just maps and messages? 3GB ($7.95) is enough for a week. Streaming or a laptop hotspot? Unlimited starts at $15.95 for 3 days. See how much data each app uses.
Which networks does the Japan eSIM use?
It uses NTT docomo, Rakuten Mobile, KDDI/au and SoftBank, and joins whichever has the best signal where you are. Daily data runs on SoftBank only. Unlimited runs on KDDI/au only. You get 5G where the network has it, if your phone supports 5G, and 4G everywhere else.
Will I have signal on the bullet train?
Yes. The Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka has signal the whole way, tunnels included. On other lines it can drop for a minute or two in long mountain tunnels, then comes straight back.
Does it work on the Tokyo subway?
Yes. Every Tokyo Metro and Toei station has coverage, and so do the tunnels between them, so maps and messages keep working underground.
Do Google Maps and train apps work in Japan?
Yes, nothing is blocked in Japan. Google Maps shows train times, platforms and which station exit to use, and Japanese train apps work as normal.
Is an eSIM better than a SIM from the airport?
You're online as the plane lands, with no queue at a counter and no card to swap. Your Australian SIM stays in the phone, so you keep your number and have no tiny card to look after for the trip.
When does my Japan plan start?
When the eSIM first connects to a network in Japan. Install it on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly: the days don't start counting until you land.
Can I use the Japan eSIM as a hotspot?
Yes. Every Japan plan can share its data with a laptop, a tablet or a travel partner's phone. Anything you share comes off the same plan.
Does the Japan eSIM include calls and texts?
No, it's data only, with no local number. Call and text over WhatsApp, iMessage or FaceTime. Your Australian number stays on your phone, so texts like bank codes still arrive.
